H.T. Burleigh’s Hope Cycle
ABSTRACT
H.T. Burleigh’s significance as an artistic composer is due to much more than his spiritual arrangements. In this paper I will examine the Five Songs of Laurence Hope song cycle by H.T. Burleigh and its history and pedagogic value. Through secondary scholarship, archival research, and score analysis I will assert that the Hope songs are not only proof of H.T. Burleigh’s significance in the American musical canon but also a valuable pedagogical tool for the advanced singer to hone their technical and artistic abilities.
